One person found dead after flames rip through North York highrise

Fire crews rescued at least six people from a burning apartment building in North York, but one person was found dead after the blaze was doused.

Toronto Fire Services Chief Matthew Pegg said the flames erupted late Friday afternoon at 235 Gosford Blvd. — southwest of Jane St. and Steeles Ave. W. — and quickly spread to apartments on several floors.

One person was sent to hospital in stable condition and others were treated at the scene by medics, he said.

Sadly, one person was later found dead on an eighth floor balcony.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and those affected by this tragic loss,” Pegg said in a message posted on Twitter Saturday morning.

About 100 personnel and 22 trucks responded to the fire.

TTC buses were brought in for residents to take shelter from the cold after they had just minutes to flee their apartments.

Firefighters battled the blaze into the night.

It’s believed about 700 residents have been displaced by the fire and it’s not yet known when they will be able to return to their homes.
