A British teen is now blind after living on a diet of french fries, Pringles, and processed ham for years.
The Daily Mail reports the young man, age 19, lived on a diet of french fries, Pringles, and processed ham and did not eat vegetables or fruits for a decade. He started to lose his sight when he was 14-years-old due to a condition called Nutritional Optic Neuropathy since the lack of nutrients caused damage to the nerve in the back of his eyes. The diet resulted in him developing a deficiency in important vitamins such as vitamin B12, copper and vitamin D.
He says the condition has left him feeling isolated and that doctors did not advise him to make changes in his diet.
‘I’ve become very isolated. When I was little I’d go out and play football with my friends. I’m too frightened to do that now. When I asked for help, they didn’t listen to me’

His mother left her job to become his primary caretaker and said he is unable to find a job or compete school due to his blindness.
‘He has no social life to speak of now. After leaving school he got into college to do a course in IT. But he had to give it up because he could not see or hear anything.
‘He would love a job – but he has not been able to find anything he can do. I had to quit my job in a pub. I now look after him full-time.’

Dr. Denize Atan said in a statement that the young man is able to navigate himself due to having a peripheral vision but his optic nerve is permanently damaged and he has a blind spot in the middle of his eyes.
‘Doctors and families need to be aware that having a poor diet and eating pringles all day doesn’t just affect your heart and lead to obesity. It can also damage vision.’
